Highlander has been around since 1985, they started as a company selling climbing equipment. Later as the company grew, they started making outdoor sports equipment. The aim was to market products that have the quality of the military but with a cheaper price tag. The company has grown steadily and now offers products all over the world.

Highlander has always remained a family business, now that the founder's sons have entered the company they plan to continue it for many years to come. Consequently, in 2014 Highlander won an award, the Herald Family Business Award which represents the best small to medium-sized Scottish family business.
