Description:
There is an amazing amount to say about this little backpack and the Savotta fans among us probably already know all about it.
At first glance, the Hatka 12L might just look like a roll-top bag with shoulder straps, but on closer inspection, a lot is happening. This design was conceived as part of a special military carry system, which required a small daypack that could be easily attached to a larger backpack.
On the outside, you have four PALS webbing rows. These can be used to attach pouches, bungee cords and buckles to quickly attach/unattach the Hatka to a larger backpack. The four loops at the bottom can be used for elastic cords, so you can carry stuff under the backpack such as e.g. your tarp or your mackintosh.
Two long internal compartments are there to organise smaller items, and the D-ring provides a point for securing small valuables. The large external compartment against your back is big enough for a water bag or tarp.
The simple 25 mm woven shoulder straps are attached to D-rings and fully removable, and thus also replaceable with padded shoulder straps if you wish. These can also be set up as a single diagonal shoulder strap. These are designed to be lightweight, foldable and easy to store to attach the Hatka to larger backpacks.
Clip it and attach it to a larger backpack for use as a "grab and go" daypack. This can be done by stuffing it under the lid or by using packing straps. The really great way is to attach the Hatka to the side compression or lid straps using G-hooks or PALS-mounted SR buckles.
If needed, you can add a lot of gear to the outside of this otherwise quite small package. The PALS strap allows you to attach pouches, but it (and the four loops at the bottom) can also be used to thread bungee cords around rain gear, tarpaulins, etc.
Because the Hatka is in many ways a spiritual successor to the venerable 202 daypack, it also has very rudimentary shoulder straps. This reduces weight and bulk, which is great if you are attaching it to a larger pack. If needed, you can easily replace these with more advanced padded options.
Although there are not too many compartments, you can still make good use of them when packing smartly. The main compartment can naturally hold your big stuff, while the two small inner compartments can fit all kinds of small items and even water bottles. The D-ring can be used to clip or tie down small valuables. The external compartment against your back can be used to carry a closed-cell foam pad as a frame blanket, or to carry a tarpaulin or drinking bag.
