How to use a strop?

With a strop, you work differently than with a grindstone. You certainly don't want to cut into your leather so you work in the opposite direction as when sharpening. Place your knife on the end of the strop with the back of the knife towards you. Now pull the cut , flat across the strop towards you. In other words, always pull your knife with the cut away from you. Now turn your knife around with the cut towards you and push the blade away from you. Repeat this at least 20 times per side. Ray Mears even recommends doing this 50 times per side.
